In 2014, our building celebrates its Centennial year (1914-2014) and The School House, our bed and breakfast in Missouri, proudly celebrates its 26th anniversary as Rocheport's premier bed and breakfast inn.
The School House Bed + Breakfast, circa 1914, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Our Central Missouri bed and breakfast was once a 4-room school for grades one through twelve for the river village of historic Rocheport. The elementary level used the school building until 1972, when the Rocheport school district merged with the New Franklin Rural Consolidated School District, approximately 10 miles northwest of Rocheport. The previous owners purchased the building in 1986 and after 15 months of extensive renovation, opened the School House Bed + Breakfast in April 1988 as the first bed and breakfast in Rocheport and one of the first in Missouri at that time.
Over the past 26 years, the inn has grown along with the town of Rocheport as a favorite destination along the Katy Trail. Starting with 6 guest rooms, the inn has expanded over the years to its current 11 elegant guest rooms, all with private baths and four with two-person jetted tubs. The guest rooms on the first and second floors, created from the four original classrooms, have 13-foot ceilings and large 8-foot schoolhouse windows. The two guest rooms on the third floor, the former attic level, feature gables and dormers with ceiling skylights. And our newest guest room on the ground level with 8 foot ceilings offers the privacy of being the only guest room on that level.
In 2006, a conference room and kitchen facility, named the Faculty Lounge, was created in the walk-out basement level to provide private meeting space for corporate retreat groups and a bridal changing room for the many blufftop weddings at the Les Bourgeois Vineyards, just one mile from the School House.
Known for its romantic atmosphere, the inn is the perfect getaway for couples celebrating special occasions or just celebrating togetherness, away from their hectic daily lives. It also caters to recreational cyclists coming to enjoy the Katy Trail and Rocheport's Les Bourgeois Winery during their relaxing bed and breakfast stay.
Conveniently located midway between St. Louis and Kansas City, the inn also meets the needs of business groups seeking a central venue for weekday management retreats.
Our separate 'Dormitory House' located next to the Inn, was built in 2007 with 2 private guest rooms providing more basic lodging for serious Katy Trail cyclists who are passing through Rocheport on their multi-day cross-state cycling trip.
In 2012,our new sister property, the Clark Street Lodge, was added to meet the needs of families with small children, girlfriend getaways and other small groups.
Mike and Lisa Friedemann moved from Tulsa, OK to purchase the School House in late 2002 and serve both as owners and innkeepers of the B&B today.
The School House has won several honors and distinctions over the past 25 years. Highlights include:
